Very sad news last August 24, 2015, when inspirational IndyCar driver Justin Wilson has died after being struck by debris from a rookie driver in a race at Pocono Raceway. Justin is survived by his wife and daughters. Justin was just 37. His family has our deepest condolences.
Justin generously shared his story and frequently met with and encouraged young students.
“It makes you more determined to prove yourself. And you can do what you want to do. You can fulfill your dreams, no matter what it is.” – Justin Wilson, multiple Indy race car winner.
“I really struggled at school,” Wilson said. “I remember one day, the teacher asking what you want to be when you grow up. And everyone went down and did their thing and it got to me: ‘I want to race cars.’ And everyone laughed. What’s wrong with you guys? And then some joker stood up, ‘Oh, you’ll never race cars. You’re too stupid’….
“The big thing that stands out to me is to let kids know you can follow your dreams,” Wilson said.
“The hard work at school I took that across into the racing world and just tried to apply myself and work as hard as I can,” he said.
“I never really understood the benefits of talking about it before, but your story might help someone…To me, it’s just who I am and is part of my life.”
Thanks, Justin for the example you led and for helping the next generation.
